University of Niš – History
The story of the University of Niš began on June 15, 1965, the day this institution was officially founded. At that time, it became the youngest university in the country, the third university in Serbia, and the seventh in Yugoslavia. Since then, Niš has transformed into a true university city, marking more than five decades of academic growth, innovation, and educational mission.
However, the foundations for higher education in Niš were laid even earlier. In 1960, the first three faculties were established under the academic guidance of the University of Belgrade. This planted the first seeds of higher education in southeastern Serbia. The environment of Niš—a historic city on the River Nišava and an important economic and cultural center—proved to be highly fertile ground for academic development. These early initiatives grew rapidly, establishing strong roots and shaping the future of the region.
During the period of dynamic industrial growth and social transformation across Yugoslavia, the newly formed University added fresh energy, ambition, and academic vision to the region. For young generations, it became a symbol of opportunity, progress, and intellectual awakening.
A Milestone for the City and the Region
The founding of the University of Niš represents one of the most significant events in the modern history of the city. As the University developed, it simultaneously reshaped the image of Niš, its region, and the broader Yugoslav community. Throughout decades marked by economic, technological, and societal changes, the University played a crucial role in educating the skilled professionals needed for national progress.
Over the years, the University led reforms, initiated development processes, and contributed substantially to education, science, the arts, and society. Today, with more than 50 years of tradition, it stands as a stable, mature, and respected academic institution—a true temple of science and art in this part of Europe.
Its mission is defined by expanding knowledge, supporting innovation, and fostering the development of individuals and society.
A Bridge to the World
By its nature and role, the University of Niš is a link between Serbia and the world—connecting global scientific trends, European educational standards, and international artistic developments. It is also a bridge to young generations and academic communities worldwide, nurturing future leaders driven by curiosity, ideals, and creative vision.
As emphasized by the first Rector, Prof. Dr. Branimir Janković, during the University’s opening ceremony:
“The University of Niš is a great historical event for all of us, for our region, and for the Republic of Serbia. It will strongly develop its technical, scientific, social, educational and cultural activities and contribute to the faster development of this region, the Socialist Republic of Serbia, and our Yugoslav community.”
His words have been confirmed through every decade of the University’s growth.
